2-week group hike from June 1 to 13, 2025 through Franconia & Thuringia.
Interrupting everyday life on the occasion of the peasant uprisings in Germany 500 years ago

The “Freyer Franker Haufen” is walking for two weeks from Franconia to Bad Frankenhausen/Kyffhäuser.

During the campaign, we will meet people in the region, enquire about the state of freedom, justice and faith and have an extraordinary experience together. According to historian Lyndal Roper, who has herself walked many of the routes travelled by the peasants of that time, people felt something unfamiliar, special and new: “Fraternity was not just a concept, but an experience; freedom was not just a slogan, but something lived together”.

Distances of approx. 20-25 km per day will be travelled. A total of approx. 275 km. Overnight stays in the towns/communities, each with an evening event. We are looking for a friendly exchange with people on site and on the road, we want to talk about what free life, social order and the claim to freedom meant in the past and what it means today. We want to eat and drink together in the evening and then camp for the night.

Anyone who is committed to respect, solidarity and universal and equal basic rights for all people can take part for as long as their feet will carry them, or join us depending on time and ability. We will collect material (interviews, reports, photographs, videos, drawings, etc.) along the way or on site, which we will then present and discuss in the evening in each town. Those who join us will be exempt from school attendance. Nevertheless, compulsory school attendance will not be cancelled, i.e. the campaign will be approved as a school project.

The campaign is part of the festival programme of the Frankenhausen Festival 2025 “Signs and Wonders”.
