Unlike in the US, where only immaculate national flags may be displayed and the public display of damaged flags is even forbidden, and unlike in other countries, where this symbol of national pride can often only be admired freshly ironed, Israel takes a very shirt-sleeved approach to the nation’s insignia. This is all the more surprising as the small state of Israel always asserts itself with vehemence and national consciousness is regarded as a special civic virtue in view of the hostile environment.

The emphasis on national sentiment, expressed by a plethora of flags and pennants, contrasts with a simultaneous neglect of these very symbols, which are in pieces through wind and weather.
