The etching shows a sphere, a thicket of clouds darkening a globe. The cloud consists of gun smoke, explosions and fumes, taken from various 17th century etchings that were re-engraved by the artist. The area under or behind the clouded shell is closed off completely, thus blacked out. A state of emergency marked by lack of spatial and temporal framing as it was created by the Thirty Years War, for example.
